West Ham manager Sam Allardyce is famed for his astute approach to the transfer market. During his Bolton Wanderers days, a series of veteran signings, namely Jay-Jay Okocha, Ivan Campo and Fernando Hierro, not only became cult-hero gold, but also helped the Reebok club record their highest finish of the Premier League era.

And more recently at Upton Park, Allardyce once again ventured into obscurity this January when he snapped up former Birmingham defender Roger Johnson and Italian duo Marco Borrielo and Antonio Nocerino on loan deals, to help the East London side’s top flight survival.

So with that in mind and the summer window drawing ever-closer, here’s a list of SIX ‘transfer wildcards’ – essentially players of relative obscurity, potentially coming with a flight risk and certainly not linked to the Hammers in the tabloids – that should be on Big Sam’s radar.
