West Ham defender James Collins is hopeful that his side can build on their impressive recent form to secure a top-half finish.

The Hammers have spent the majority of the current campaign embroiled in a desperate fight against relegation, which even led to calls for manager Sam Allardyce to be relieved of his duties over the festive period.

But three recent wins against Aston Villa, Swansea and Norwich have seen the Londoners move clear of the drop zone and into 11th position.

West Ham finished the last campaign one spot above their current location, and Collins is hopeful that they can pull off an “unbelievable” feat and match their 2012/13 result:

“We’ve just got to get as many points as we can now. Obviously we’re still not safe. Obviously that’s the main objective,” he is quoted by The Express.

“If we could finish there or there abouts where we did last year, that would be an unbelievable season.”

Collins also says that he always felt a rise up the table was a possibility given the close-knit nature of the league at the moment, and that a number of top players returning from injury has also helped:

“We knew if we could turn it around we’d move up the league quite quickly.

“So to get the points and the way we’ve been playing has been much better as well.

It’s the first time we’ve had a proper fit squad so the confidence is back and it looks on the up.”
