West Ham boss Sam Allardyce has warned Andy Carroll not to expect to walk back into the club’s starting XI once he has served his suspension.

The Hammers’ record signing is one game into a three-match ban for a red card received after a coming together with Swansea’s Chico Flores.

Despite the Irons’ best efforts, the FA dished out the expected punishment to the striker, who served the first of his enforced absences over the weekend.

With Carroll out of action, Carlton Cole and January addition Marco Borriello are likely to feature prominently in Big Sam’s attack.

Allardyce was impressed with the stand-in duo during Saturday’s 2-0 win against Aston Villa, and suggested that if they keep up their form then his star forward may be unable to get back into the team.

“Carlton Cole and Marco Borriello played a dual role in Saturday’s superb 2-0 win at Aston Villa,” Allardyce told the Daily Star.

“They had 45 minutes apiece, which is what I talked to them about before the game and told them to go out and give us your best 45 minutes and help the team try and win.

“Both made a contribution on Saturday and they have to continue to do that.

“For me, what about this? Andy Carroll gets over his suspension, West Ham haven’t lost a game and won most of them, and Andy Carroll has to sit on the bench.

“That would be nice.”
