Sam Allardyce has admitted his West Ham side has underachieved in the Premier League this season.

The Hammers boss has suffered a difficult season at Upton Park and has regularly been under fire by disgruntled fans who are unhappy with the style of play he adopts at the club.

And with the club not quite mathematically safe from relegation, Allardyce admits West Ham have not been as good as they should have been this campaign.

He told whufc.com: “Last season was an overachievement and I think this season has been an underachievement up to now.

“There are certain circumstances as to why that’s been the case, as we all know. They’ve been well documented, not just as a business but also publicly. It’s been a tough one.

“In the last three games we haven’t failed by performance, but we have failed by individual errors at a certain time and of course certain errors by officials. They’ve cost us pretty dear as well I think.”

And Allardyce has revealed that, although preliminary plans are in place to strengthen the playing squad this summer, nothing can be done until the Hammers are mathematically safe from relegation.

“The reality for us is that we’re not mathematically safe so we can’t put any of our plans in to practice,” he added.

“We have the first draft if you like, but we can’t react on any of that at the moment because we’re not mathematically safe.”
