West Ham defender George McCartney has admitted it was gutting to lose 6-0 to Manchester City in the Capital One Cup semi-final.

The Hammers came into the game on the back of a 5-0 loss to Championship side Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup, but were unable to put in a strong performance at the Etihad.

A hat-trick from Alvaro Negredo, along with a goal from Yaya Toure and brace from Edin Dzeko, meant that West Ham have conceded 16 goals in their last 4 games. And McCartney has admitted the defeats have been tough to take, but has thanked the fans for their support.

“It’s just a disappointment all around. It’s the semi-final of the cup and as much we tried to put the effort in, we just weren’t good enough,” the defender told the club’s official website.

“The players and the staff all appreciate the support the fans give us. They haven’t had much to cheer about for the last few weeks but the lads are trying to turn that around. It’s not going to be easy [to forget about this] as defeats like that are hard to take. We need to move on to the Cardiff game on Saturday and we need three points.”

West Ham’s poor form has piled the pressure on boss Sam Allardyce, despite the club’s owners reiterating their support for the 59-year-old to lead them to Premier League survival.
