’s young hero Tony Watt has told the press that his deciding goal against Barcelona at Celtic Park was “probably” the best moment of his life.
Last night the Scottish champions took on the mighty Barcelona in the Champions League and recorded an against-the-odds 2-1 victory over the Spanish Giants. Celtic went 1-0 up after Victor Wanyama headed home from a set piece and substitute Tony Watt came on to score a second for the Hoops after 83 minutes. Lionel Messi scored a last minute consolation goal, but it was too late to affect the final result.
The Scottish side produced a fantastic rearguard display; finishing the match with just 11% possession as the Catalan midfield controlled the game from just outside the Celtic box. The remarkable win reduced Celtic fan and rock singer Rod Stewart to tears at full time.
After the game, 18-year-old Tony Watt told reporters: “It was the stuff of dreams for me, without doubt. It was my first goal at Celtic Park for the first team and it couldn't have been any better for me.
Watt signed for Celtic in 2011 for a mere £80,000 from Airdrie United. The Scot has only made sixteen appearances for the Parkhead club, but will surely go down in Celtic folk law following his unforgettable goal.
“It’s probably the best moment of my life. I’ll look back at it when I’m older and think ‘We’ve just beaten Barcelona in the Champions League’ – there’s nothing better.”
The value of Watt’s goal could soon outweigh his transfer fee if Neil Lennon's men qualify for the Knock-Out stages of the Champions League. Talking on talkSPORT radio, Celtic and footballing legend Henrik Larsson believes anything is possible now that the Scots have pulled off a memorable upset.
“Celtic will take a lot of positives over the two games against Barcelona,” he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show. “I know it will be different playing against other opposition but this team is very strong.
“They play for the club and for the manager and when you have a team like that the sky is the limit” he added.
