Celtic have a storied and famous history in European competition. It's a history that the club's supporters take immense pride in.

Whether it's being the first British club to win the European Cup, making it to Seville or beating Barcelona on the club's 125th birthday, time and again Celtic have shown they belong on Europe's elite stage.

A cold November night under the bright lights of Paradise against the best the continent has to offer is what every Celtic fan dreams of at the start of the season and tonight's game is no different.

To overcome this Barcelona side Celtic will have to tap into that rich history and produce a performance beyond their ability on paper.

Here are five massive nights in Europe that could provide such inspiration...

21/11/2006: Celtic 1-0 Manchester United

It was ten years ago this week that Celtic booked their place in the Last 16 of the UEFA Champions League for the first time with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United.

Never have the stands of Celtic Park shaken quite so violently as when Shunsuke Nakamura's once-in-a-lifetime free-kick soared over the Man United wall and past Edwin van der Sar into the top corner of the goal.

Not content with letting Nakamura be the only hero of the night, Artur Boruc stretched every inch of himself to beat away Louis Saha's penalty in the final minutes of the game provoking a reaction from the Celtic supporters that will live long in the memory of anyone there that night, or watching on TV.

31/10/2001: Celtic 4-3 Juventus

Celtic's 2001 European campaign was their first in the UEFA Champions League and their 4-3 victory over Juventus on Hallowe'en announced their arrival on Europe's biggest stage in the modern era.

One of the most exciting matches in the history of the competition, it was the brilliance of Chris Sutton and Henrik Larsson that secured all 3 points against one of the giants of club football.

The Juventus side boasted stars such as Davide Trezeguet, Edgar Davids and the legendary Alessandro del Piero but on that night it was the heroes in the Hoops that shone brightest.

The victory ultimately wasn't enough to progress from the Group Stage but it's a night that Celtic supporters continue to reminisce about as one of the greatest victories in the club's history.

03/10/2007: Celtic 2-1 AC Milan

AC Milan arrived at Celtic Park in October 2007 as European champions and red hot favourites to secure victory against the Bhoys. However, having been beaten by the Italian side in the Last 16 of the previous season's competition, Gordon Strachan's men had something to prove.

This was the night that showed no matter how your team looks on paper, anything is possible at Celtic Park in front of 60,000 passionate fans. Scott McDonald, having signed from Motherwell for £700,000 just months earlier, pounced on a shot parried by Dida and fired it home in the last seconds of the match to give the Hoops a joyous victory.

A certain Scott Brown started that evening and going into Wednesday night's match, he's certainly one who knows how far the special aura of Celtic Park can take you.

11/03/2004: Celtic 1-0 Barcelona

By 2004, Celtic Park had been established as one of the most formidable arenas in modern UEFA competition. The Barcelona that arrived weren't quite of the quality we've seen in recent seasons but still boasted some of the world's best talent, including Ronaldinho.

The flip-flapping feet of Ronaldinho weren't enough for Barcelona who succumbed to a 1-0 defeat thanks to an iconic Alan Thompson finish, as good a goal as you'll see from 8 yards.

It was a first leg victory that helped Celtic to their second UEFA Cup Quarter Final in as many seasons and kept the good times rolling under Martin O'Neill.

07/11/2012: Celtic 2-1 Barcelona

This is the prototype of the performance Celtic need to produce on Wednesday in order to beat Barcelona.

The tight, narrow defence. The clinical finishing. The combative midfield. The little bit of luck you'll always need. It had everything.

Again it's a demonstration of what can happen should the stars align above Paradise in the East end of Glasgow. Tony Watt, far from the global superstar you'd expect at this level, latched onto a miscue by Javier Mascherano and powered a finish past Victor Valdes.

It was a scene straight from the most optimistic of Celtic fan fiction and remains the benchmark that the Hoops strive for each season.
