Celtic are having a storming season under new boss Brendan Rodgers.

Since joining in the summer, the Northern Irishman has inspired his side to go undefeated domestically - including a 4-3 win over Motherwell on Saturday afternoon.

A League Cup Final win last week saw the club pick up a historic 100th major honour, with Rodgers delivering silverware just months into the job.

There's always room for improvement though and with supporters expecting Champions League football every year, there's no time to rest with the squad in hand.

The squad has shown it's full of talent this season, with the likes of Moussa Dembele, Scott Sinclair, Scott Brown and Erik Sviatchenko performing superbly.

While the depth of the squad is sufficient for domestic success, Celtic lack options in key areas should injuries or form drops occur before important European matches.

With all that in mind, here are our FIVE priorities for Rodgers in this transfer window...

A partner for Scott Brown

Scott Brown is having one of his best seasons in a Celtic shirt and looks to be a player who could play beyond the level of the Scottish Premiership.

Not just doing it domestically, the captain is also bringing his best game to continental competition, competing excellently against some of the best midfields in the world such as Barcelona and Manchester City's.

The problem Celtic have, however, is their talismanic midfielder's history of debilitating injuries and at the age of 31, he doesn’t have too many years left ahead of him.

Stuart Armstrong has found new life in his Celtic career in recent weeks playing alongside Brown. But he's struggled in Europe and while Nir Bitton can be a class act on his day, he doesn't always turn up in the big games.

Bringing in a quality central midfielder should be a priority for Rodgers if the Bhoys are to make the next step in Europe, to guard against the absence of Brown and to give a better option than one of current partners.

Insurance at right-back

Mikael Lustig

We can find no fault with Mikael Lustig on the right side of Celtic’s defence but the defender’s future with the Hoops may be in doubt.

With just over six months to go until his contract expires in Glasgow, Lustig is free to speak to clubs about a potential move abroad at the end of January.

He’s given no indication he wants to leave Celtic but we know how these things go sometimes.

Regardless, the Bhoys could do with someone to provide competition for the Swedish international, with Cristian Gamboa seemingly unable to find a way into Rodgers’ plans.

Most Celtic fans will be hoping Lustig sticks around but with important games coming thick and fast next summer, perhaps someone should be brought in so there are no squad deficiencies in the European qualifiers.

A goalkeeper for the future

With Craig Gordon 33 years of age and Dorus de Vries 35, Celtic’s goalkeepers are no spring chickens.

Gordon has proven reliable for the Hoops once again after a rather shaky start to the season gave De Vries the opportunity to make the No. 1 jersey his.

Still, if there’s an area the Hoops need to look to the future with, it’s probably this one.

None of Celtic’s younger goalkeepers have made a breakthrough into the first team and Rodgers will likely have to look elsewhere for younger talent to come in and compete with the ageing goalkeepers.

More width in attacking areas

Scott Sinclair’s absence through injury in recent games has been a big blow to Celtic’s attacking threat.

James Forrest has stepped up with some vital contributions across the campaign, most notably in the Scottish League Cup final, but Patrick Roberts has offered Rodgers’ side little this season, especially in comparison to his dazzling form under Ronny Deila.

With Gary Mackay-Steven having not made a single appearance this season, even from the bench, it’s fair to say that Rodgers lacks genuine width in attacking areas.

A replacement for Dembele?

As we discussed earlier this week, the transfer rumour mill is in overdrive with regards to Moussa Dembele.

Scoring 17 goals this season, the 20 year old Frenchman is attracting attention from the Premier League and beyond.

Leigh Griffiths isn’t a half-bad replacement and last season’s 40-goal hero has chipped in with 9 of his own this campaign, showing ruthlessness when he does get an opportunity.

Beyond that however, Celtic have nobody reliable; Nadir Ciftci isn’t the answer.

Should Dembele leave - either in January, the summer or after - Celtic will need another striker.

If Celtic are offered upwards of £20m for Dembele then they might be tempted. Using some of that cash to land another quality striker would surely be the top priority in such a scenario.
