Football fans have been left scratching their heads over the EFL's decision to name the Championship Team of the Season seven weeks before the end of the campaign.

With the race for promotion still very tight at the top end of the table, plenty is up for grabs.

However, the Football League has opted to announce the best players of the second tiered division already.

Four members of the Brighton team make the cut, while Leeds United duo Chris Wood and Pontus Jansson are also included.

Chris Gayle and Jonjo Shelvey of Newcastle United are named in the team, along with Huddersfield Town pair Aaron Mooy and Tommy Smith.

Fulham left-back Scott Malone has been selected, while Huddersfield boss David Wagner is handed the manager's role for the Team of the Year.

It was not just fans who were bemused by some omissions, but Newcastle United themselves tweeted their shock in Ciaran Clark not making the cut.

As well as some questioning the selections, plenty were baffled by the timing of the announcement.
