Unfortunately for Sunderland midfielder Jack Rodwell, he is no stranger to injuries, and it appears as though he is set for another spell on the sidelines.

Manager David Moyes has confirmed that the former Everton player suffered knee ligament damage during the Black Cats’ 3-1 loss to Stoke City last Saturday. The Scotsman told reporters:

"Jack had a medial ligament injury. He was scanned on Monday after getting it in the game on Saturday, and the scan has not come up with anything. I'm hoping that it shouldn't keep Jack out too long.

"He's just beginning to get a couple of games under his belt. To have Jack out (against Burnley) was a blow. They thought that he'd opened his medial ligament so the scan has not shown a great deal. We're hopeful that he might just have to stay off it for a week or so and let's see how he is."

Rodwell has made just 13 appearances in all competitions this season, and 10 of them have been in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old had only recently returned to first-team action after spending two months on the treatment table with a hamstring problem.

It is fair to say that Rodwell has had a stuttered career at the Stadium of Light since his 2014 switch from Manchester City having made just 55 league outings in two-and-a-half seasons.

Perhaps he does not have the biggest influence in the team, but his fresh injury trouble is a blow for Sunderland, who are second from bottom in the top flight, one point from safety.
