City History
Donetsk is a city that developed from a thriving coal and metal industry, large deposits of coal and iron ore within the region effectively raised the city from the ground up. An Englishman named John Hughes managed the metalwork growth in Donetsk in 1868 during Russian rule. Consequently, for a brief time the city was named after the inspirational John Hughes for providing work for locals, developing the city and creating an economical boom within the region. The city was named Yuzovka or Hughesovka. In 1924 the city was re-named Stalino and from 1941-1943 was occupied by Nazi Germany, battles and bombing devastated large parts of the city. Following WW2, it wasn’t until 1961 and the denunciation of Joseph Stalin that the city was renamed Donetsk after the Donet river. After the collapse of the USSR and Soviet Union, the rise of Ukrainian nationalism saw the official formation in 1991 meaning Donetsk was a part of Ukraine.
Shakhtar Donetsk are one of Ukraine’s oldest football clubs, originating from the Soviet football leagues. Founded in 1936 as Stakhanovets from 1936-1946, since 1992 they have been known as FC Shakhtar Donetsk. They play at the Donbass Arena named after the heavily industrialised, Russian influenced region Donets Basin or Donbas. The stadium holds a large capacity of 50,149 and has been awarded a UEFA five-star rating. During Shakhtar’s envolvement in the Soviet leagues they were seen as a tough mid-table cup specialist club. After the formation of the Ukrainian Premier League in 1991, Donetsk have been a dominate force. Their trophy cabinet boasts; Ukrainian Premier League (6), Ukrainian Cup (7), Ukrainian Super Cup (3) and perhaps their biggest triumph, UEFA Cup winners in 2009.
