DW Stadium | Built in 1999

The DW is a superbly designed stadium - one that generates a lot of noise from a relatively limited number of fans. Its opening coincided with Wigan's rise up the leagues, and it now plays host to regular Premiership football. All four stands are of roughly the same height, and the stadium has open corners. Visitors can expect a decent amount of legroom and unrestricted views of your heroes and fantasy football players. Away fans are accommodated in the North Stand, which can hold up to 5,500 people.

The stadium is shared by Wigan Athletic and the town's rugby union club, Wigan Warriors.

Tickets / Where to sit

Tickets are priced at £20-£30 for adults and £15-£20 for concessions. Tickets for Wigan games are not too difficult to get hold of, especially for away fans, as there is a larger than normal proportion of away seating. For Season Ticket holders you should already know where you’re sitting and what to expect but no doubt you’ll be keen to read on anyhow so please do.

But for those of you that don’t own a Wigan Season Ticket however, below is a comprehensive guide to the DW Stadium.

Getting to DW Stadium

Train

Wigan North Western & Wigan Wallgate stations are a good 20 minute walk from the ground but still doable. Go under the railway bridge and keep to the right and follow the road (A49), after passing the Seven Stars Hotel you’ll encounter another railway bridge and hey presto there’s the JJB.

Car

Address: Wigan Athletic FC, JJB Stadium, Robin Park Complex, Newtown, Wigan, WN5 0UZ.

Ok so now you need to get there. Options: Stick the address in your Sat Nav, or use one of the many great transport links for Manchester.

Be Green….Walk. Maybe not. Most team’s matchday programme detail the directions to the upcoming away fixtures. If they don’t they’re somewhat useless but there’s always the AA Route Planner. Type in the address above or the address of one of the car parks listed below or just follow your Sat Nav/Tom Tom which has made this section relatively redundant.

Parking

Large car park behind away end (£4) but of course means delays in getting out after game. Don’t be clever and park in the retail park (maximum stay 2 hours and have known enough people who have forked out for a clamp removal). Otherwise, town centre and walk/bus/taxi in.

Where to drink

The Red Robin is popular with visiting fans and is only a few minutes away from the ground opposite the Cinema Complex. A Marquee Bar, specifically for away supporters which welcomes families, is also available.

The Orwell is also well known as this one’s an award-winning pub and at the Wigan Pier with food well worth a much on. Five minute walk from both stations and a five minute walk along the canal to the ground. The 'Swan & Railway' pub in the town centre, opposite the Wigan North Western Railway Station, is worth avoiding if you’re an away supporter but I can recommend the Wetherspoons in town which also offers accommodation.

Where to eat

The DW Stadium is located out-of-town, but luckily for supporters it's adjacent to a retail park - a split choice between Pizza Hut and McDonald's.

Your usual burgers, pies and hot dogs and lager is served in all stands, yet the concourses are pretty small considering the away allocation given so be prepared for a crush at half-time.
