Arsenal offered little fight against London rivals Chelsea as they went down 2-0 in this Capital One Cup Round 4 tie.

Arsene Wenger's side have made a table-topping start to their Premier League campaign, but this trophy remains the one piece of silverware the Frenchman is yet to win for at least another year as he watched Jose Mourinho's side turn on the style at the Emirates.

Mourinho complained about the scheduling of this fixture prior to kick-off but outsmarted old foe Wenger for the ninth time of his managerial career as goals from Cesar Azpilicueta and Juan Mata secured a comfortable route into the quarter-finals.

It was perhaps fitting, too, that Juan Mata became the star of the show. The Spaniard was linked with a move to the Emirates during the summer and has struggled for game time since Mourinho's return as Blues manager. But his superior talent shone through throughout, adding to the questions asked of why he isn't being used more often.

The Gunners failed to get a grip of the game from the very start and Chelsea were enjoying most of the possession and creating more of the chances. So the only surprise about the opener was the fact it was full-back Cesar Azpilicueta who capitalised on Carl Jenkinson's weak headed back pass to slot home on 25 minutes.

The second half provided much of the same as the first. Chelsea were a lot more comfortable on the ball and Arsenal were becoming more and more frustrated, which wasn't helped by Nicklas Bendtner's lacklustre and poor performance up front.

Kevin De Bruyne saw a curling effort saved by Gunners stopper Lukasz Fabianski, while Aaron Ramsey saw a rare Arsenal effort skim agonisinly wide of Mark Schwarzer's post.

But Juan Mata doubled Chelsea's advantage in some style with his first goal of the season on 66 minutes. Samuel Eto'o cut the ball inside to Willian on the left and the Brazilian nodded on brilliantly to set-up Mata, who took one touch before slamming a right-footed drive past Fabianski from 25-yards.

Substitute Olivier Giroud saw a late effort saved by Schwarzer before Chelsea midfielder Ramires saw a speculative effort land the wrong side of the cross bar at the end.

Chelsea appear to be finding the right gear under Mourinho, with this result making it six successive wins. Arsenal, however, suffered back-to-back home defeats for the first time since the turn of the year.

Wenger insists the league is his top priority this season, which current form indicates, but Arsenal fans will no doubt be disheartened at their side's performance in what wasn't just a fierce London derby, but also an opportunity to end an eight-year wait for a trophy.

Mourinho's Chelsea have now beaten Manchester City and Arsenal in their last two outings and goal scorer Mata admitted afterwards that victories against the country's top sides will only make them stronger.
