David Moyes’ side have performed a lot better in cup competitions this year and now find themselves just two games away from reaching the Capital One Cup Final.
United haven’t had an easy run in the competition however, having faced in-form Liverpool in Round 3 where Javier Hernandez’s goal separated the two sides.
Old Trafford was then the destination for the second Premier League side to face United in the Capital One Cup this year, as Norwich visited the Theatre of Dreams, only for David Moyes’ men to run riot in a 4-0 win.
The Scotsman, elected by Sir Alex Ferguson as his successor, will be hoping that he can win this competition to get his tenure off to a winning start. And to do so against their fierce rivals Manchester City in the Final, would certainly put the icing on the cake for the Old Trafford faithful.
Having played one more game than their Semi-Final opponents Manchester United, Sunderland have been the biggest surprise in this last four stage of the Capital One Cup, where they’ve looked a very different team to the one we’re used to seeing in the Premier League.
The Black Cats have been the giantkillers in the competition this year, having knocked out Southampton 2-1 in the Round 4 and then Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea side in the Round 5. However Gus Poyet has seen his side play at home in every round of the Capital One Cup so far and a trip to Old Trafford could prove too much for the Black Cats.
West Ham United
Before the Hammers’ impressive 2-1 comeback against Spurs, Sam Allardyce had a relatively straightforward run in the Capital One Cup, with the only other Premier League opposition being Cardiff City, who they were fortunate to beat 3-2.
Ravel Morrison has been the standout performer for the London club and any success that the Hammers are to have, will invariably come through the England midfielder.
Upsets often occur in the Capital One Cup and although West Ham will have to be at their very best to knock out Man City, who knows what Sam Allardici has up his sleeve!
Manchester City deserve to be favourites for their Capital One Cup Semi-Final clash due to their league form and many neutrals will be hoping for a Manchester derby in the Final at Wembley.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side have been the great entertainers in this year’s Capital One Cup, having scored 10 times in three games. The Citizens beat Wigan 5-0 and then dispatched Newcastle 2-0 away from home in an impressive victory.
The blue side of Manchester will be the side to beat this year, after they qualified for the Semi-Finals by knocking out Championship side Leicester City, but in this competition, you never quite know what’s going to happen.
