Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez has admitted he's disappointed with the clubs lack of movement in the January transfer window and doesn't know why Andros Townsend wasn't signed, The Independent reports.

What's the word?

Having made his ambitions for the January transfer window abundantly clear, Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez has stated his disappointment at the lack of action by the club- particularly the failure to complete a deal for Andros Townsend.

The Magpies wanted to bring Townsend back to Tyneside from Crystal Palace and Benitez felt he should have been able to complete a deal, having boasted a £30m profit from the summer despite bringing in a wealth of new faces to St. James' Park.

However, Newcastle were unable to complete a deal and Benitez was left disappointed by the failure in that deal and the club's inability to sign a dominant midfielder, the boss made is frustrations clear in comments to the press.

What was said?

Speaking to reporters after Wednesday night's 2-2 draw with QPR, Benitez was asked if he knew why a deal for Townsend didn't go through and he replied:

“No, because I don't know. I said before, I’m disappointed but at the same time I have to concentrate on the players we have and try have to improve them as much as I can. I was in communication with Lee (Charnley) all the time so I know more or less what we have done. Still I don't know what happened."

“We knew what we needed. We knew what we have. We have to bring the best from the players that we have.”

“We have to stick together. We have the fans. They have to realise they have to support the team. The players have to realise they are the players we have. They can be very important players for this club. If we are promoted, they will be famous, heroes, stick together.”
