Everton are keeping tabs on St Etienne goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier ahead of a potential summer move, according to French journalist Manu Lonjon.

What's the story?

The reporter has tweeted that Everton, as well as Liverpool and West Ham United are tracking the 30-year-old shot-stopper.

Sport Witness claims that Everton are still on the lookout for Tim Howard's replacement.

The USA international returned to his homeland last year after a nine-year spell at Goodison Park.

Ronald Koeman signed Maarten Stekelenburg shortly after arriving as the club's new manager, but the Dutchman is still keen on bringing in another keeper.

Stekelenburg lost his starting spot when he suffered a leg injury at the end of December, and has failed to win back his place due to Joel Robles impressing in between the sticks.

Is Ruffier a good option?

It was not that long ago that Everton were linked with Manchester City keeper Joe Hart, who is likely to be available when his loan move at Torino expires at the end of the season.

Hart would be a strong addition to any club, but his wages could prove a big stumbling block.

With that in mind, Ruffier is unlikely to demand similar wages and he provides something that every team needs - consistency.

It was only recently when the Frenchman's run of 207 consecutive appearances came to an end, so if the Toffees want to compete with the elite clubs in the Premier League, having a solid goalkeeper is imperative.

Ruffier would also arrive at Goodison Park with a reputation as being one of the best in his position in France, suggesting that he will not buckle under the pressure of playing in the Premier League.
