As reported by The Daily Mail, Everton's James McCarthy is a January target for both Crystal Palace and Championship side Newcastle United.

What's the story?

Both Crystal Palace and Newcastle are eager to do business this week that can ensure they are not playing Championship football next season, the Eagles at the bottom of the top-flight and the Magpies at the top of the second-tier.

One man both are looking at is Everton's James McCarthy.

According to The Mail, both clubs are considering late window offers for the Republic of Ireland international.

A player that can shine?

McCarthy had been a regular starter for Everton in the three seasons prior to Ronald Koeman’s arrival in Liverpool but has struggled to force his way into the Dutchman’s plans.

He’s started just 6 Premier League matches this season, though did make three starts in a row in December before picking up a hamstring problem, returning from the bench recently.

Still just 26, he has plenty to offer any potential new club with his determination, tackling and ability to drive forward often being a positive for the Toffees.

With the emergence of Idrissa Gueye, the addition of Morgan Schneiderlin and the steady hand of Gareth Barry, there is a fair bit of competition at Goodison right now and move away could be the best thing for all parties.

He's a good option for any club hoping to make an impact in the Premier League. Newcastle are probably more likely to be playing top-flight football next season so despite having to drop down a level until the summer, is that the best option for the Irish midfielder?
