Manchester United face a fight on the transfer front for the services of Benfica ace Nelson Semedo as Bayern Munich have joined the hunt, Portuguese outlet O Jogo report.

What's the word?

Manchester United's interest in Nelson Semedo has been reported for a while and with the Red Devils' links in Portugal, a deal certainly makes sense. However, Benfica could enjoy a bidding war as O Jogo reports Bayern Munich are also keen on the young full-back.

Following Philipp Lahm's announcement of impending retirement, which caught the Bavarian giants off guard, Carlo Ancelotti's side are in a rush to secure a deal- amidst reports Benfica would sell for €40m, €20m lower than his release-clause.

Bayern's interest in Semedo is also not anything new and the Bundesliga leaders have already made an approach to their Portuguese counterparts, which may put in a fork in the road for Manchester United's summer plans.

Where's best?

Nelson Semedo would likely benefit from a wealth of playing opportunities with Bayern Munich, as they need a capable, young first-team full-back to replace retiring legend Lahm, but Manchester United could similarly offer regular football.

The Red Devils need to bolster their defensive line a right-back is an area where they're currently very weak and it's safe to say Semedo would significantly improve their squad. However, they may prioritise other top deals, for the likes of Antoine Griezmann, over a swoop here.

That could open the door for Bayern to take advantage, as the Bavarian side only have the right-back area of the squad crying out for reinforcing, and they could use Portuguese starlet Renato Sanches to lure his compatriot to the Bundesliga.

Manchester United have their own links in Portugal though, notably Jose Mourinho himself.
