I often wonder what the motivation must be for Steven Gerrard to continually put on an England jersey. Here is a footballer, who only today was labelled the best in the world by Patrick Viera that is constantly being played out of position to fill holes in voids in the team and gets pillared for not having the same affect that he does at club level. Is it honestly any wonder? I mean what is the point of being trained to be the best plumber around, if someone is going to ask you to do the electrics. It defies belief and yet every England manager does it.

Didier Deschamps was famously one dubbed as nothing but a ‘water carrier' by the irrepressible Eric Cantona. It is a dirty job and someone has to do it and I bet if you asked Zinedine Zidane what he thought of his club and country sidekick, then you will get a somewhat different response.

Gareth Southgate once famously remarked "we wanted Winston Churchill, but we got Ian Duncan-Smith" - a damning assessment of Sven's motivational abilities, but an insight into the modern footballer. They may get paid handsomely and to the neutral it should be motivation itself, but it's clear that they a need a leader, someone to inspire them and my word how Spurs are crying out for them.
