Football FanCast columnist Jim
McKendry wonders whether Cristiano Ronaldo will
finally break the mould and be the first Premier League star to win
the coveted, World Player of the year award.
Thierry Henry's
failure to collect the World Player of the year award, during his Arsenal days, must rank
as one of the biggest mysteries in football. How a player who use to score 30+
goals every given season, provide countless assists and was simply unplayable
at times, never got the recognition by football's governing bodies is a
disgrace and highlights once more the lack of appreciation the Premier League
receives.
Football FanCast
columnist Jim McKendry looks at two Liverpool Legends and wonders
why they have failed to set the International scene alight.
If there are two players who will certainly get inducted in
the Premier League hall of fame at some point in their lifetime, then it has to
be Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher. They are two of my favourite players and
the real heartbeat of that Liverpool side and both would run through the
proverbial brick walls for the cause. I don't where both players will rank in
their great club illustrious history but I'm guessing they have already done
enough to be considered among the best.
Football FanCast columnist Jim McKendry looks south of the border at
Arsenal football club and feels the club is in very safe hands under Wenger and
has challenged his critics, to name the players who they think Arsene should bring
in to guarantee success.
Arsene
Wenger has not had shall we say a pleasant last few months in English football.
A combination of injuries, poor results and now player unrest has constituted
the bitterest of pills that will be fully digested when the Frenchman looks at
pictures of Sir Alex Ferguson or Avram Grant holding aloft a Premier League trophy.
Make no mistake about it should have been Arsenal's - the outstanding team for
two thirds of the season and I'm sure that the ‘professor' is just at pains to work out how it happened.
Football FanCast columnist Jim McKendry is delighted to see Celtic take an 8pt lead and wonders whether Rangers
have the stomach to stop them winning a third successive title.
I don't think there was one Celtic fan who truly believed
two months ago that we would still be in the Championship race. Such was the
way Gordon Strachan's team was performing with a complete lack of zeal; it
looked like we had all but surrendered our SPL title.
Football FanCast
columnist Jim McKendry reacts to news that Sunderland owner Niall
Quinn is going to back Keane in the summer and wonders, given that Keegan is
likely to spend big as well, which set of fans should be the more optimistic
about next season's chances.
When Newcastle United entertained Sunderland at St James
Park a fortnight ago, it was the first time that both teams had been on a level
playing field for some time. Both teams safe from relegation both slumped just
below mid table and from a neutral looking in Newcastle could have considered
themselves fortunate that they came out victors on the day.
Football FanCast
columnist Jim McKendry seeks to find who should be rightly
considered the greatest goalkeeper in the Premier League's history.
They say you have to be mad to be a goalkeeper. It's fair to
say you rarely find a bright one but one thing that you can never take away
from them, is their paramount importance on a football pitch. They are the last
man, there is no hiding place for them and their side's success can simply be
dependent on their performances.
