First game I remember:
The first Gillingham match I remember getting really excited about was during our FA Cup run back in 2000. We'd gone 1-0 down to Sheffield Wednesday, who at the time were a Premiership side, but came back through Mark Saunders and Andy Thomson before Nicky Southall let fly with a long range volley which John Motson for one got rather excited about! We got to the quarter finals that year and won promotion via the play-offs at Wembley.
Favourite Song:
I had the last waltz with you,
two lonely people together.
I fell in love with you,
the last waltz should last forever,
it's all over now,
nothing left to say,
just the Gills in the Rainham End singing,
la, la la, la la la la, la la la la,
The Gills!
Favourite Player ever:
If you ask 100 Gills fans this you'll probably get the same 100 answers. Andy Hessenthaler is simply Mr. Gillingham. I don't think you'll find anyone who cares about the club more as his enthusiasm on the pitch showed week in week out, despite the fact he was nearing his forties. He also led us to our highest ever league finish in the Championship as manager and is now in charge at Dover where he's doing well with a few ex-Gills in his ranks.
Favourite Game:
We needed a draw to stay up on the last day of the 2003/2004 season at Stoke. 90 nervous minutes later and a 0-0 has never been so celebrated as we avoided relegation on goal difference from Walsall, the relief was something else!
Best moment with team:
Maybe not the best from an extreme point of view, but by far the most pleasing moment I've had following Gills was when Bas Savage bundled the ball home from about two feet at Cheltenham last season. I'd been hearing for about four months that 'Big Bad Bas' was in no way a footballer and had no chance of ever scoring or making an impact with us. Most of those opinions being a close friend and Cheltenham fan, a phone call headed straight down the other end of the ground!
