Name: Daryl Janmaat
International Caps: 19
Position: Right Back
Compared by Dutch legend Ronald de Boer to Dani Alves, Daryl Janmaat’s stock has risen enormously in the last year. Reports are suggesting that Manchester United and Tottenham are prepared to battle over the right back’s signature this summer. Having started all three group fixtures, Janmaat was surprisingly dropped for the tie against Mexico and will hope to earn a recall tonight against Costa Rica.
Very much a modern full back, the 24 year old scored twice and racked up five assists for Feyenoord in the Eredivisie this season. Janmaat clearly possesses an offensive mentality and loves to drive forward at every possible opportunity. The Dutch defender often pins the opposing winger inside his own half by forcing him to track back.
The 24 year old uses his pace to beat the man and frequently provides the overlapping run. In possession, Janmaat likes to utilise the one-two to create space for a shot on his left foot or a cross on his stronger right foot.
Despite these offensive characteristics, the Dutchman is more than reliable in defence. According to Squawka, the 24 year old won an average of 56% of his duels in the Eredivisie, using his physical strength to out-muscle opponents and guard the ball when in possession. At times positionally suspect, Janmaat often is able to use his pace to make up for these errors.
The Dutchman only has a year left on his contract and has reportedly informed Feyenoord of his intention to move on. Like so many modern full backs, Janmaat is very offensively minded which at times can be to the detriment of his defending. But for a knockdown fee, United and Tottenham should seriously consider making a move for the 24 year old this summer.
