Name: Alex Song
International Caps: 48
Position: Centre Midfield
The ex-Arsenal midfielder has lost his way since joining Barcelona in the summer of 2012. It never really felt as though he’d become a Barcelona regular when he signed, and it’s little surprise this became reality. It seems as though Barca are willing to let him leave this summer with Manchester United and Chelsea circling the Cameroonian, eager to add him to their squad.
He is the hub of the Cameroon midfield. The African side seriously lack creativity, but Song provides most of the little invention that exists in the squad. At Arsenal he became known for his combinations with Robin van Persie. He is positive in his passing, always looking to carve open the defence by getting the ball to the feet of the strikers.
The penetration he adds comes from a deeper midfield role. He is traditionally a defensive midfielder, sitting in front of the back four to disrupt opposition attacks, but he often looks to quickly get the ball forwards once it is back in his possession.
In his Arsenal days Song was a key figure. Despite being a defensive player, Song always had attacking intent. He improved quickly, forcing his way into the starting 11 before becoming the flamboyant destroyer we see today.
Chelsea have already raided the Spanish league this summer, and Manchester United are in need of practically everyone, such was the disgrace of their previous season. Song has a lot to give, and he has a previous track record in the Premier League. United are in need, and Chelsea are always willing to spend. Song would give another dimension to either side, but United’s desperation could see them fight their corner much tougher.
