Name: Maxim Choupo-Moting
International Caps: 27
Having refused to extend his contract with Mainz beyond this summer, Choupo-Moting is believed to be interesting an number of European sides including Schalke. The forward is expected to retain his place in the Cameroonian side for the encounter with Croatia tonight, with the Indomitable Lions looking to bounce back from their opening defeat to Mexico. In the market for attacking reinforcements, Liverpool and Newcastle should keep a close eye on the 25 year old’s performances this summer.
Capable of operating centrally or on the left of an attacking three, Choupo-Moting seems to have finally cemented his place in the Cameroonian starting eleven. For years, Samuel Eto’o and Pierre Webo have kept the forward out of the side but the 25 year old seems to have carved out his spot in the wide position. At Mainz, Choupo-Moting frequently interchanges positions with other members of the attack to good effect.
Despite standing at an impressive 6 foot 3 inches tall, the rangy Cameroonian forward provides a pacey and skillful outlet for club and country. In the Bundesliga this season, Choupo-Moting averaged 3.6 dribbles per game and netted ten times. For Cameroon, the forward has an impressive record of thirteen strikes in just twenty seven appearances.
However, the 25 year old provides a headache for his managers as he is plagued by frequent inconsistency. Although he can turn the game with one inspired dribble, Choupo-Moting is also guilty of going missing for long periods of the game. This is why at Mainz this season, then-manager Thomas Tuchel preferred to deploy the forward as an impact substitute.
If Choupo-Moting can iron out the frequent inconsistency from his game, he could prove to be a real attacking asset for most European and Premier League sides. On a free transfer though, Liverpool or Newcastle might just decide that the Cameroonian forward is worth gambling upon.
