When it comes to big transfer fees, it goes without saying that the figures are not that big down in the English third tier. Of course, Accrington Stanley did break the bank once in their recent history when they decided to buy Ian Craney from Swansea City for a reported fee of £117,000 back in 2007/08.
And since League One is actually the highest they’ve come in decades, the fact that this the only transfer of note doesn’t really come as a surprise. The rest were all free transfers that stood out and the club can’t really boast with any other record breakers.
Of course, the situation is slightly different when we take a look at their departures. Just recently, in 2018/19 for example, they’ve sold Kayden Jackson for a reported fee of £1.6m when the player joined Ipswich Town in the Championship.
That move eclipsed the previous record holder, Matty Pearson, who was on top of the mountain with his £500,000 price tag Barnsley paid for him a year prior to that. Bobby Grant rounds off the top three with his £315,000 move to Scunthorpe United in 2010/11.
Seeing how most of their deals nowadays are free transfers, it’s likely that the transfer record hierarchy remains unscathed for the foreseeable future. Only time will tell, though.
They may not spend the big bucks often or at all but there have still been some pretty big names donning their colours throughout the years. When talking about the modern-day players, we simply have to mention the transfer of Craney who arrived from Swansea City for that historic figure of £117,000 back in 2007/08.
On a similar note, when Jackson departed for Ipswich Town in 2018/19, it made the club an insane amount that’s not likely to be repeated that soon. But there are also some other players, some also from the days long gone, who deserve a mention.
The likes of Gary Roberts, Dave Hargreaves for his two spells with the club or even Mark Sertori are big names in their history books. Of course, there are many more that would warrant at least a shout but these are some of the transfers that ended up having a big impact on the club during their spells with the team.
It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the club next.
