The decision to hand Granit Xhaka a new contract is looking worse and worse as the Arsenal midfielder's transfer value continues to plummet.

He joined the Gunners in a £30m move from Borussia Monchengladbach after the club's hierarchy pulled out of a deal to sign N'Golo Kante from Leicester City.

That now looks like one of the worst decisions in the modern era, especially as the Switzerland international continues to cause controversy in north London, whilst the former Arsenal target continues to win more silverware at Stamford Bridge, the most recent of which were the Champions League and Super Cup.

There have been arguments over the years that Xhaka was never a player pushed for by then-manager Arsene Wenger and that he was actually a name that came up through a service called 'StatDNA' - something that Ivan Gazidis championed for.

At one stage, the French veteran wanted to sign Antoine Griezmann from Real Sociedad but the aforementioned system said otherwise.

Throughout his five years at the Emirates Stadium, Xhaka has seen the captaincy stripped from him, has been sent off four times, including one before the international break against Man City - a game Arsenal were well-beaten 5-0 - and he very nearly left the club before Edu Gaspar and co offered him a new contract extension.

During the same time frame, the 28-year-old's value has gone from a career-high £45m in December 2018 to a new low at Arsenal as his worth now stands at just £19.8m, which is a decrease of 56%, as per Transfermarkt.

Although that should come as no surprise given his inconsistencies on the pitch.

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville lambasted Xhaka back in 2019 after his rash decision in one north London derby. "Absolute madness from Xhaka from an experienced player who never becomes experienced," he claimed as the Gunners were beaten by Spurs. "He does it week in week out and never learns."

More recently, club legend Kevin Campbell dubbed him a "liability" only last month.

The longer the 98-cap Switzerland star is at the club, the more the club has to deal with the consequences of Gazidis-created nightmare. As evident against City before the international break, Xhaka continues to let Arsenal down and he can count his lucky stars that he was not ruthlessly axed in the summer.

As his value continues to crash, it'll be harder and harder to get him off the books for a decent fee.
