Arsenal: Sol Campbell would shine under Mikel Arteta

Arsenal have started off the Premier League season with a bang. Mikel Arteta’s men currently sit top of the table on 24 points, one clear of Manchester City.

It might be too soon to talk about a title challenge, but if they can maintain these performances up until the hiatus for the World Cup, then it could be a shootout between them and City.

Will Arsenal win the Premier League this season?

Yes

No

There are improvements to be made, however, specifically defensively, with the club conceding ten goals in the league so far, keeping just three clean sheets.

If Arteta could turn back time, there might be one defender he would love to have in his prime starting at the heart of Arsenal’s backline…

Sol Campbell would be perfect for Arteta

Arsene Wenger managed to lure Sol Campbell to Highbury on a free transfer back in 2001 following the expiration of his contract at rivals Tottenham Hotspur when he was arguably at the peak of his powers.

In his first season at the club, Campbell played a crucial role in Arsenal claiming their second double under Wenger, playing 31 matches in their winning Premier League campaign.

He featured in 35 games as Arsenal went the 2003/2004 season unbeaten, earning the ‘Invincibles’ moniker and won his third FA Cup with the club the season after, marking the period as one of the finest in the club’s history.

The centre-back represented England 73 times during his career and having featured at the 2006 World Cup, Campbell became the only player to have represented England at six major tournaments.

Who was Arsenal's first signing in the 2021 summer transfer window?

With his brute strength and physicality, Campbell would work well alongside William Saliba at the heart of the Arsenal defence.

Wenger once dubbed the Englishman as “unbelievable” and by starring under the Frenchman for five seasons, there is no doubt a player of his calibre could give Arteta’s side that final piece of the jigsaw that could set up a potential title challenge.
