Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Premier League midfielder Lee Hendrie has highlighted Arsenal’s persistence to play out from defence as a huge issue.
Mikel Arteta’s men have come under fire at times this season for refusing to clear their lines, while the Spanish manager himself has recently been critical of the mistakes his team have been making at the back.
It is something Arteta will be hoping his side can eventually iron out as they look to start challenging for Champions League qualification again.
Arsenal currently sit 10th in the Premier League, meaning even securing Europa League football could be a stretch.
On the Gunners’ unwillingness to go long, Hendrie told FFC in an exclusive interview:
“I’ve watched Arsenal quite a bit this season and they really do take risks in that sort of 18-yard box. We’ve seen so many times where they just had so many comical errors, you know, silly goals that they give away playing on the edge of the six-yard box.”
It is certainly something for Arteta to think about, though the Gunners are not alone when it comes to making a host of defensive errors at the back.
In fact, both Chelsea (6) and Liverpool (10), have made more errors leading to goal in the Premier League this season.
