Arsenal have been quite busy breaking their transfer records in the past years. The arrival of Nicolas Pepe in the summer of 2019 for a fee of £72m meant that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was no longer their most expensive acquisition to date.
Of course, the Frenchman’s stay at the Emirates has been a mixed bag and the young winger is still trying to settle down and show the full array of his abilities that we’ve witnessed from his stint in Ligue 1.
Apart from Aubameyang, who was the previous record holder with a sum of £57.3m, Arsenal also bought Alexandre Lacazette that same season for £47.7m. Intriguingly enough, the future of both is currently unclear despite their influence over the years.
Without a shadow of a doubt, Thierry Henry’s transfer from Juventus to Arsenal in 1999 for a reported fee of £14.5m was an incredible piece of business for the Gunners. Of course, the Frenchman’s legacy at the Emirates has since transcended into godhood but he is not the only influential figure to grace the pitches for the London outfit.
The likes of Patric Vieira, Dennis Bergkamp and Robert Piers are definitely worth a mention and then some. In the modern days, Pepe’s arrival ruffled a couple of feathers to say the least and so did the arrival of Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund as the pacey Gabon forward was a highly sought after player at the time.
We shouldn’t forget the arrival of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid in 2013/14 nor the acquisition of Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona in the year after that.
