Arsenal could be about to finally axe Granit Xhaka as an exciting transfer report has emerged…
According to Goal, the Gunners have Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes on their radar and are considering making an official bid for the Brazil international before next month’s deadline.
It’s not the first time that the North Londoners have had an interest in the 23-year-old powerhouse, having tried to sign him during the January 2020 transfer window but at the time, the player did not want to leave the Ligue 1 outfit.
Lyon will only part ways with their first-choice starter for a fee in the region of €35m (£30m), whilst Arsenal’s failed advances for Sassuolo’s Manuel Locatelli could accelerate a move for Guimaraes.
It seems as if Mikel Arteta is searching for an instant replacement for the likely departure of Granit Xhaka, who seems set on a move to Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma.
As per Sky Sports Italia (via the Daily Mail) last week, the Swiss international was closing in on a move to the Serie A outfit, with only the finer details to be ironed out.
By signing Guimaraes, the Gunners can finally sanction Xhaka’s exit.
The £27m-rated midfielder has excelled for Lyon in recent seasons, and last term he rated out as one of their most consistent performers – as per WhoScored, he averaged 2.3 tackles per game and a phenomenal 90.5% passing accuracy, earning a seasonal rating of 6.81.
Right now, the Brazilian is continuing his fine form on the international stage, impressing at the Olympics, where he has been described as “one of the best players of the tournament so far.”
He’s amongst the top four for chances created (six) and assists (two), and has carried on his impressive ball-playing ability with a 91.53% passing success rate, via SofaScore.
According to football talent scout Jacek Kulig, Guimares is a “perfect mix of a deep-lying playmaker and box-to-box midfielder” and has “world-class potential”.
The 23-year-old is clearly an integral cog in Lyon’s side, too, as Houssem Aouar has waxed lyrical about him before.
“He has real importance to the team game. He puts in a lot of effort, he pushes between the lines and constantly offers solutions for our defenders. His presence is doing us a lot of good,” claimed the French playmaker to reporters (via GFFN).
On the above evidence, there cannot be many better candidates to replace Xhaka’s void in midfield next season.
Gunners chief Edu Gaspar must look to pay Lyon the £30m they’re demanding in order to land the “elite talent“. He’d be the perfect addition to Arteta’s engine room this summer.
