Eduardo Camavinga: Arsenal’s next Patrick Vieira?

Arsenal may be about to stumble on their next Patrick Vieira amid emerging reports…

What’s the word?

According to French outlet Le10 Sport, the Gunners have reignited their interest in Lyon’s Houssem Aouar this summer but for now, they are prioritising a move for another Ligue 1 midfielder.

Eduardo Camavinga.

The Stade Rennes midfielder is widely regarded as one of the finest young talents in world football right now but he would not come cheap, with the French outfit thought to be demanding in the region of €50m (£45m) for the 18-year-old gem.

Camavinga made an interesting decision to join Jonathan Barnett’s agency last year. He represents the likes of Gareth Bale, Mason Mount, Jack Grealish and Ben Chilwell, so perhaps that could help smooth a potential move into the Premier League.

 Shades of Vieira

With the futures of Granit Xhaka and Matteo Guendouzi up in the air right now, the North London giants could certainly do with another option in central midfield and there aren’t many bigger talents out there than Camavinga.

Indeed, current French national team head coach Didier Deschamps lauded his potential, claiming: “He is a very young player with a lot of great skills and huge talent.”

Arsenal have long lacked a physically imposing presence in the heart of midfield. You could argue that Patrick Vieira has never truly been replaced but in the Rennes wonderkid, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta could do exactly that.

Should Arsenal swoop for Camavinga?

YES, 100%

YES, 100%

The fellow Frenchman was just 20 when he joined Highbury from AC Milan, and the rest was history.

Despite still being a teenager, Camavinga has already registered 82 senior appearances for the Ligue 1 side, where he has proven to be an absolute animal in terms of defensive output.

As per WhoScored, the 6-foot monster averaged a whopping 2.8 tackles per game in 2020/21, supplementing that with 1.2 dribbles whilst in the Champions League, he displayed his immense ability to read the match, managing 1.5 interceptions across four appearances.

Camavinga has been dubbed an “extremely complete midfielder” capable of playing box-to-box as well as in a holding role, with football scout Jacek Kulig claiming that he “has the potential to be one of the best in the world.”

His form hasn’t gone unnoticed either as he’s already earned himself three senior caps for Les Bleus, which shows that Deschamps sees him making an impact on the international stage, sooner rather than later.

Perhaps the most glowing of endorsements have come from Paul Pogba.

“It is a pleasure to see him don the shirt. To score after his first starts, that is honestly wonderful. I was truly happy for him. I only wish him the best and much more,” the Manchester United star claimed.

“He has everything for that. His future is in his hands. He is very at ease, he is a little dancer. He makes me think a bit about me. He is not a timid person. It is good, because he is confident. He has confidence in his qualities. He is a very good youngster, I like him enormously.”

Also compared to N’Golo Kante and Claude Makelele, it’s clear to see that Camavinga is going to be a future star in the defensive midfield role, so Arsenal chief Edu Gaspar must ensure it is he who wins the likely tussle to sign him.

The Gunners could wave goodbye to Xhaka and land Thomas Partey a perfect, and frightening, engine room partner in the £49.5m-rated beast.

If anyone’s to be their next Vieira, it’s him.
