Arsenal could make a last-ditch attempt to sign Cody Gakpo before tomorrow's transfer deadline...

What's the word?

That's according to journalist Melissa Reddy, who delivered an update on the Dutch winger's situation at PSV Eindhoven heading into the final two days of the summer window during Sky Sports' 'The Transfer Show' on Tuesday evening (via the Express).

"It’s not surprising that a lot of Premier League clubs are looking at him. One of the other names I was told to keep an eye out for, is Arsenal, who have said they would like to enhance their offensive options," she revealed.

"His people feel pretty confident that, given the amount of clubs that are looking at him, he will move."

The Eredivisie side are thought to be after a fee of around €40m (£34m).

Shades of Henry

This would be quite a bold statement of intent from the Gunners, should they manage to win the race for Gakpo ahead of their Premier League rivals such as Sunday's opponents Manchester United, Leeds United and Southampton.

It's no secret that manager Mikel Arteta has been seeking attacking reinforcements, particularly on the wing, having signed Gabriel Jesus to fill their void up top.

Gakpo would be an outstanding acquisition and one that could become an instant hit with supporters around the Emirates Stadium, given his likeness to a Gunners great in Thierry Henry.

Just like the talismanic striker, the Netherlands international started out as a tall winger (6 foot 2) but has somewhat transitioned into a versatile attacker capable of leading the line, too.

"I always refer to Thierry Henry and Robin van Persie - he's not at that level yet. But they came into the Premier League as left wingers and were turned into strikers under Arsene Wenger and did very well," claimed Dutch football expert Marcel van der Kraan to Sky Sports News.

"He is slowly being transitioned into a striker because he has had some good coaching from [Ruud] Van Nistelrooy."

Last season, the 23-year-old dynamo provided a whopping 21 goals and 15 assists from 47 appearances in all competitions, and he even wore the captain's armband in some of their biggest games, such as in the Europa Conference League, as per Transfermarkt.

That form has transitioned into the new campaign, where he has already scored four times and laid on six assists from just eight outings. That includes a trio of goal contributions against the Eredivisie champions Ajax, too.

It's perhaps little surprise to have seen Gakpo lauded as an "enormous talent" by Telegraaf journalist Wierd Duk and as "simply phenomenal" by scout Jacek Kulig.

As such, on the above evidence, technical director Edu Gaspar could well end Arsenal's summer with a big bang by making this last-ditch attempt to sign Gakpo, who clearly would add an abundance of talent to Arteta's squad.
