Arsenal's squad is looking rather thin heading into the final 24 hours of the January transfer window and it appears as if they aren't close to any additions...

What's the word?

That's according to the ever-reliable David Ornstein of The Athletic, who delivered a worrying four-word update to fans on Twitter earlier today.

"No incoming deals close," he said after revealing that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was close to joining LaLiga outfit Barcelona on loan, though that still has some work to complete due to his huge wages.

Gutting news

He goes on to explain how the 32-year-old's exit isn't dependant on the Gunners bringing anyone in before Monday night and that 'as things stand', nobody is close to being acquired.

Real Sociedad striker Alexander Isak's appearance in the English capital over the last few days has set the rumour mill flowing, with the Swede said to be a long-term target for the club.

They have also missed out on other frontline targets, such as Dusan Vlahovic, who has swapped Fiorentina for fellow Italian side Juventus, whilst a move for Lille talisman Jonathan David also seems unrealistic in the next day.

This is hugely worrying news if you're an Arsenal fan.

The north Londoners have let no fewer than five players depart - Aubameyang would make it a sixth - all without signing a single player themselves. It means Mikel Arteta is light on options right across the pitch and it's an issue that isn't going away anytime soon.

Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah would be the only two senior strikers left at the club and both are out of contract in the summer, and both aren't likely to remain past the end of the season.

Elsewhere, Arsenal are only one or two injuries away in midfield from a bit of a crisis, having let Ainsley Maitland-Niles depart on loan despite seeing a couple of options go to the Africa Cup of Nations this month.

It seems plausible that tomorrow will be a bitter and disappointing end to the month for much of the Emirates Stadium faithful.
