Arsenal could sign Lacazette replacement in Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard

Arsenal could sign the perfect replacement for Alexandre Lacazette in Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard.

What’s the story?

With reports in recent days linking Ligue 1 side AS Monaco with a move for Lacazette in the summer, Arteta looks set for a summer rebuild in the striking department.

Should Arsenal sell Lacazette?

According to The Scottish Daily Mail (26/02, back page) via HITC, Arsenal are considering a summer move for Edouard, but that it’s AS Roma and fellow Premier League side Leicester who are currently leading the race to land his signature.

Arteta’s dream striker

The Athletic’s James McNicholas wrote earlier in February about how neither Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Lacazette appear to be what Arteta demands from his number nine, saying: “The issue with Aubameyang and Lacazette is not one of quality, it is one of type. Arteta has a habit of using the word ‘specificity’ to discuss positional requirements, and it feels as if there‚Äôs something very specific he wants from a centre-forward that neither of these two quite offers.”

Pointing to Ollie Watkins’ performance against the Gunners, McNicholas simply added: “This was, however, a perfect example of the kind of all-round, all-action display Arteta seems to demand.”

And if it is an all-round game that the Arsenal boss wants, then Edouard fits the bill to a tee. Not only is he a superb finisher – he’s already racked up 20 goals in just 32 games in all competitions this campaign – but he’s also a very fine creator of goals too, already registering 35 assists in 160 games for Celtic.

Starting off with an easy one...

Not only that, but Edouard is someone who does a lot more than just poach goals inside the width of the penalty box. As per Sofascore, he makes more dribbles per game than either Aubameyang or Lacazette, wins possession back more per match, and also averages far more key passes too.

Edouard’s all-round game appears to be comfortably more suited to Arteta’s desire of a starting striker, and it’s exactly why Edu should look to land the star dubbed as “outstanding” by former Celtic boss Neil Lennon.
