Arsenal: Arteta could land his own Luis Diaz with Wilfried Zaha swoop

Arsenal have begun the Premier League campaign in scintillating form, recording four wins from four for the first time since their unprecedented invincible season in 2003/2004.

Arteta appears to have brought back the feel-good factor to the Emirates and some of the Gunners faithful must be thinking some sort of glory can be achieved this season with the way they are playing.

It’s of course still too early, and with a few more days of the transfer window remaining, the Spaniard may add another one or two faces to his squad to give it that extra bit of quality.

Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha could be an option for them in the remaining days of the window, per Dean Jones, and he could be available for £30m.

With his contract expiring next season and reports claiming that Palace have no intention of letting him go for free, they will either need to tie him down to a long-term deal or sell him.

Arteta’s own Luis Diaz

Former Arsenal manager Unai Emery revealed Zaha was his first choice before signing Nicolas Pepe and it certainly looks like they got the wrong deal regarding that transfer.

Zaha has 105 goal involvements in the Premier League (64 goals, 41 assists) in 281 matches and would easily slot into the Arsenal side.

The Ivorian is compared to Liverpool winger Luis Diaz as per FBref’s similar player model and if Arteta does manage to sign him before Friday, he will be hoping he has the same sort of impact.

The Colombian scored six goals and grabbed four assists in 26 games following his move from Porto in January and Zaha certainly has similar goalscoring abilities.

Last season, the Palace winger netted 14 league goals, while he also generated 104 shot-creating actions over the course of the season, more than double that of Diaz (49).

Zaha also completed 2.42 dribbles per match, while making 7.72 progressive carries each game, with Diaz having completed slightly more dribbles per 90 (2.77). The Liverpool winger actually made marginally fewer carries (7.53 per 90) than Zaha.

Should Arsenal sign Zaha?

These stats show that the two are incredibly similar, as they both provide an excellent goalscoring threat from a wide area while they also have the ability to beat opponents on a frequent basis. Furthermore, with their creativity ability allowing them to generate chances for others (Zaha made 1.4 key passes per match to Diaz’s 1.5) the 29-year-old could be an important signing for the Gunners.

Neil Warnock once praised Zaha, saying “his feet are electric” and if Arteta wants to make one last statement of intent before the window shuts, sealing a deal for someone with that type of quality would be impressive. He could just unlock their own Diaz in the process too.
