Journalist David Ornstein has revealed that Arsenal players are delighted that the club have pulled off a deadline-day deal for midfielder Jorginho.

What’s the latest?

It's no secret that the Gunners have been desperate to sign a new player who can add depth to their in the middle of the park this winter and it looks as though they've finally found their man. Indeed, as per The Athletic, Mikel Arteta and co have worked out a deal with Chelsea to sign Jorginho on a contract until 2024 (with the option of a further year) for a fee worth up to £12m. Arsenal were also known to be in the market for Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo and this late pivot from one player to another may well leave many supporters disappointed. However, despite what any fans may think, internally at the club, the squad and staff seem to be pretty continent with this piece of deadline day business. Indeed, while speaking on The Athletic, Ornstein explained (1:38): "It's the big deal of deadline day for Arsenal, maybe not the one that many people were anticipating. “But the word I'm hearing from inside Arsenal is there's quite a lot of excitement among the players and staff about a very experienced player. Euros winner with Italy at Wembley against England as we remember. "He's achieved a lot in the game, [won] trophies and played at an elite level.  And I think his technical style will fit in nicely with Mikel Arteta's squad."

Decent deal?

Seeing as Arsenal now look set to be without Mo Elneny for an extended period of time – having just had surgery on a "significant" knee injury. – the need for a new option in the middle of the park was apparent. And while some may think Jorginho is very different to Caicedo, when you compare some of their stats this season, it's not quite the gap you might think. As per OptaJoe, in the Premier League this season they have the same amount of interceptions, the Italian has 3.0 tackles vs Caicedo's 2.9; 74.7 touches vs 73.7; 11.2 ball caries vs 11.0; 74.7 touches vs 73.7; and they have the same amount interceptions (3.0) per 90 minutes. What's more, Jorginho has won some major trophies, including the Champions League and the Club World Cup, so his top-level experience should allow him to bring plenty of personality into the dressing room, as well as what he can provide on the pitch, Taking it all into account, it's little wonder the players and staff seem to be so content with this deal.
