Arsenal had a great end to the 2019/20 season, lifting the FA Cup for the fourth time in eight years, overcoming Chelsea in the final at Wembley.

However, despite their cup win being the lasting image of the Gunners’ campaign, there wasn’t sustained brilliance at the Emirates, with the north London outfit finishing eighth, winning just 14 league matches all season.

Mikel Arteta certainly needed to strengthen ahead of the 2020/21 season if his side were to make a real push for the top four this time around, and with over £30m spent already, alongside a couple of free-agent signings, Arsenal have added to their squad, bolstering a number of problem positions, but are these the players to bring the Gunners back to the top table of English football?

We’ve had a go at ranking each of Arsenal’s summer signings so far…

Gabriel Magalhaes 3/5

Arsenal’s most expensive signing of the summer so far is Gabriel Magalhaes, with the Brazilian costing a reported €26m (£23.1m).

The 22-year-old comes in off the back of a successful season with Lille, where he helped guide them to a fourth-place finish in Ligue 1, securing a Europa League spot for Christophe Galtier’s men, conceding just 27 goals in 28 games before the season was cut short.

However, signings from Lille can flatter to deceive, £72m man Nicolas Pepe joined Arsenal from Lille last term, and he’s not hit the heights expected of him, netting just five league goals last season.

This could end up being a great signing, but spending a big fee on an unproven centre-back is a risk for the Gunners, and in 12 months, they could once again be looking for the missing piece in their defensive jigsaw.

 Pablo Mari 3/5

Pablo Mari may have only played three games for Arsenal after joining on loan in January, but those performances were enough to convince the higher-ups at the club to sign him on a permanent deal, exercising their £8m option to buy the defender this summer.

This is a relatively low-risk signing at that price, and the Spaniard will provide good depth at centre-back, but with Magalhaes joining, William Saliba returning from loan and David Luiz signing his new contract, it’s hard to see where he’s going to pick up minutes this term, so he can’t rank all that highly in our list.

 Willian 3/5

Willian is a 5/5 player agreeing 1/5 terms, and for that reason we can’t score his signing any more than we have.

The Brazillian will provide proven Premier League quality to Arsenal’s attack, and it wouldn’t surprise anyone to see him score double figures in terms of goals next season after bagging nine in the league for Chelsea last term.

The problem is that Arsenal have given him a three-year deal on a reported £220k a week, and by the time his deal eventually expires he’ll be turning 35, and it’s not hard to imagine a steep downturn in form at that age.

Willian could end up being one of the signings of the season this year, but in terms of the whole package they have given him, you can’t help but feel that Arsenal may be regretting this long-term contract in a couple of years.

Cedric Soares 2/5

Cedric with a thumbs up

A Portugal international on a free transfer doesn’t sound like bad business on the surface, but in the case of Cedric Soares, it’s hard to see why Arsenal have brought him in.

The Gunners already have a capable right-back in the shape of Hector Bellerin, and with Ainsley Maitland-Niles now looking like staying at the Emirates, Cedric may already be third-choice after just a couple of months at the club.

The 29-year-old could find minutes hard to come by this season, and he may very well end up being nothing more than a leech on the Gunners’ wage bill.
