Arsenal remain interested in a deal to bring Mykhaylo Mudryk to The Emirates in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who revealed in a recent video posted on his YouTube channel that, after holding positive talks with the 21-year-old in the summer, Edu remains interested in a move for the Shakhtar Donetsk starlet this winter – although the Ukrainian side are now believed to have raised their asking price from £45m to £65m for the winger.

Regarding the Gunners’ interest in the forward, the transfer insider said: “‘We know they wanted a winger. Raphinha was the dream, but it was not possible to proceed. They have had very positive contacts on Mudryk on the player’s side, but then they decided not to proceed with Shakhtar because they wanted more than £40m to £45m.

“Now Shakhtar want more than £60m to £65m, but Arsenal are still following the player. They consider Mudryk a top talent and so Arsenal are still there but let’s see because now the race is open with many top clubs, but Arsenal will be busy in the next few weeks.”

Neymar 2.0

Considering just how impressive Mudryk has been for Shakhtar so far this season, it is not difficult to see why Edu would be interested in a deal to bring the attacker to north London in January – even for a figure in the region of £65m.

Indeed, over his eight Premier Liga appearances in the current campaign, the £13m-rated talent has been in sensational form, scoring four goals and registering five assists – averaging a direct goal involvement every 62 minutes of football played.

However, it was undoubtedly the 21-year-old’s form over his six Champions League fixtures that most caught the eye this term, with the Ukrainian sensation scoring three goals, providing two assists and creating one big chance for his teammates, in addition to taking an average of 1.5 shots, making 0.8 key passes and completing 1.7 dribbles per game.

Indeed, based solely on the youngster’s 572 minutes played in the Champions League, FBref rank Mudryk in the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers in Europe’s big five leagues and European competitions for non-penalty goals per 90, as well as the top 3% for non-penalty xG, the top 13% for shots, the top 2% for assists and the top 2% for dribbles completed over the last 365 days.

Who was Arsenal's first signing in the 2021 summer transfer window?

As such, it is not difficult to understand why the Shakhtar starlet has earned comparisons to Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil star Neymar, with the player who Darijo Srna claimed is behind only “Mbappe and Vinicius Jr” in European football very much appearing to be something of a generational talent.

So, while £65m is certainly a colossal amount of money to spend on a 21-year-old, it would look to be an incredibly smart investment for Edu to make – as it could potentially mark the Gunners’ technical director unearthing his side’s very own Neymar.
