Aston Villa's versatile veteran Ashley Young is set to be available for Villa's Boxing Day clash against Chelsea at Villa Park after picking up an injury in the 2-0 win over Norwich City.

What's the story?

The 36-year-old looks likely to be involved in Steven Gerrard's side's Boxing Day match against Chelsea after the Englishman was substituted at Carrow Road 12 days ago, having picked up an injury in the match.

The injury had made the veteran a doubt for the west Midlands side's home game against Burnley last weekend, however, the contest was postponed after an outbreak of positive cases in the Villa squad.

Manager Gerrard has also tested positive which will, therefore, see the 41-year-old absent from the touchline for the games against Chelsea and Leeds United.

However, according to Birmingham Live, Young is expected to return for the game against Chelsea.

Villa fans will be elated

According to Transfermarkt, Ashley Young is a left-back, however, it's hard to pinpoint exactly what sort of player the Englishman is nowadays.

The 36-year-old has played in an array of positions for Villa this season, including both flanks defensively and offensively, central midfield and attacking midfield.

Regardless, Young's versatility makes him a vital member of Gerrard's squad and his return will be a huge relief for the 41-year-old and supporters who will no doubt be left buzzing that one of their most reliable players won't be absent for a long spell.

Having returned to Villa Park this summer, ten years after leaving for Manchester United, Young is a fan favourite and his presence and experience will be crucial as the Villans prepare to play two Premier League games in the space of three days.
