A development has emerged on Aston Villa attacking midfielder Philippe Coutinho and his current injury situation...

What's the latest on Philippe Coutinho's fitness?

The Villans head coach Unai Emery has confirmed that the Brazil international is set to be out until April after picking up a knock during the week.

Journalist Matt Maher described it as a "sour" ending to the day as it was revealed in the aftermath of the club's 2-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park in the Premier League.

Speaking after the match, the head coach said: “Coutinho is injured and it’s longer than one week. It’s a muscular injury. I think he’ll be out for one month, more or less. Yes, after the international break.”

Is Coutinho's injury bad news for Emery?

This latest setback for the former Liverpool man is bad news for Emery as his absence in the upcoming games could be a big blow for the Spaniard.

The Villans have three Premier League matches to play before the international break at the end of March and the midfielder may not be back until the club's trip to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea on the 1st of April.

Coutinho appeared to finally be hitting form after a difficult start to the campaign and he will now have to sit on the sidelines and for over a month before working his way back to fitness again.

The maestro failed to produce a single goal or assist in his first 19 Premier League games of the season and prior to the loss to Manchester City, supporters may not have viewed losing the midfielder as a big blow.

However, his performances against the champions and Arsenal in his last two outings suggested that he was on the right track to making himself a key player for Villa again.

Coutinho recorded a Sofascore rating of 7.4 against Pep Guardiola's side by completing two dribbles, winning four of his six duels, and registering one shot on target in just 14 minutes of action.

The 30-year-old followed that up by winning six duels, creating one chance, and finding the back of the net in the 4-2 loss to the Gunners - calmly receiving the ball and placing it into the bottom left corner from just inside of the box.

His displays showed great promise and the magician - who scored five goals and assisted three in the Premier League for Villa last term - could have been getting back to his magical best.

Therefore, his injury comes as a big untimely blow for both him and Villa, given the attacking quality he has the potential to provide, with any absence now set to represent bad news for Emery.
