Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez is a resilient character, someone with an impeccable mentality to improve himself day in, day out.

The decision to leave Arsenal behind in 2020 was a bold decision but ultimately, it has paid dividends for someone who is not afraid to make brave and risky calls for the sake of his career.

He had just established himself as the Gunners' number 1 and was the hero as they won the FA Cup during Mikel Arteta's first season.

However, after not being promised that he'd be starting every week, he took the decision to leave.

Not for the first time in his career, he took the right decision, now cementing himself as not only one of the best 'keepers in the division but also as one of the best in South America.

He won the best goalkeeper award as his country Argentina won the Copa America last year and afterwards, it was the legendary Lionel Messi asking for a photo together rather than vice versa.

It was the finest moment of Martinez's career but it could have been so very different if he'd taken a rather seismic choice back in 2018.

The Argentine was playing on loan at Getafe in Spain and nearly hung up his boots due to his mental health.

Speaking this week, the 29-year-old told Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster on his YouTube channel: "When I went to Getafe on loan, actually I was thinking about retiring. I was that low. That was at 24."

Villa will be thanking their lucky stars that he decided to keep playing and Martinez himself will surely be delighted.

He has won a few major trophies now and his career has been completely transformed since the pandemic started.

Few have benefitted from this turbulent time but it's safe to say the Villa stopper has come out the side a better man.

He joined the Villans in a deal worth £17m, a move that now looks like a colossal bargain. Valued at a meagre £900k during that Getafe spell in 2018, his estimations have risen quite considerably.

In fact, over the last four years, his value has increased a whopping 3100% to £28.8m.

Arsenal may now have one of the country's finest young goalkeepers in Aaron Ramsdale among their ranks but it's easy to suggest that Villa got the better deal here.

They have picked up a mentally sound goalkeeper whose headspace can now be considered among the elite in the Premier League.

Furthermore, his performances have been outstanding, being named the club's supporters' player of the season for 2020/21.

This campaign has been a little quieter for the ever-improving gloveman but he is still an incredibly reliable performer, one that has advanced his career to new levels after pondering retirement.
