Aston Villa: Gerrard eyes Trevoh Chalobah swoop

Steven Gerrard is eying a move for Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah as Aston Villa seek a replacement for the injured Diego Carlos.

What’s the news?

That’s according to ESPN, who claim that Villa are interested in taking the 23-year-old on loan from the Blues as a Carlos replacement.

Inter Milan are also keen on securing a loan move as the Premier League club face competition for the youngster, with Chelsea refusing to let the defender leave on a permanent deal.

However, the west Londoners have stated that there may be a chance that he can leave on loan before the end of the transfer window, and this could be good news for Gerrard.

Chalobah could be the perfect Carlos replacement

Gerrard made a statement of intent when he landed Carlos on a £26m deal from Sevilla in order to shore up a defence which had conceded 54 goals last season.

Things haven’t turned out how the manager would have wanted, though, with the defender rupturing his Achilles tendon in the win against Everton last week, meaning that he will be out for between seven and nine months in a staggering blow for Villa.

Which club did Villa sign Leon Bailey from in the 2021 summer transfer window?

With less than two weeks left in the transfer window, Gerrard will be rushing to bring in a replacement, and with names such as Duje Caleta-Car and Eric Bailly being touted with the Villans, a move for the young Chelsea defender is one which perhaps makes the most sense.

A loan move would work out well for both parties, with Chalobah covering the absent Carlos without Villa having to pay a big transfer fee, while the 23-year-old’s £20k-p/w wages won’t exactly break the Midlands club’s salary structure.

Should Villa sign Chalobah?

Last season, the Chelsea defender averaged an impressed 7.23 SofaScore rating for his Premier League performances. He made 20 top-flight appearances, chipping in with three goals and one assist to show that he can be an asset going forward.

Defensively, Chalobah won two tackles and made 0.9 interceptions per match while also winning 61% of his duels, proving how solid he was in Thomas Tuchel’s defence, and Gerrard could do with someone of such ability at Villa Park.

The 23-year-old is versatile, easily adapting to either flank in addition to his customary centre-back role, and this could be another plus point for the Villa manager.

With Chalobah having been dubbed “outstanding” by CBS Sports’ Adi Joseph for his performances under Tuchel last season, it appears a surprise that he could leave on loan.

However, the Chelsea manager’s potential loss may be Gerrard’s gain, and it seems that the 42-year-old needn’t look too far to find a cost-effective replacement for Carlos.
