Aston Villa: Gerrard must axe Morgan Sanson

Morgan Sanson’s spell at Aston Villa has proven to be a huge disaster and Steven Gerrard must look to get rid of the Frenchman at the earliest opportunity.

The midfielder joined Villa from Marseille in a deal worth £16m in January 2021 but he has never been able to establish himself as a regular at the club.

Since his arrival at Villa Park, Sanson has been limited to just 20 appearances in all competitions, while he is yet to appear at all this season, which suggests that Gerrard has had enough of him and will be disappointed that he couldn’t be sold during the summer.

Those lack of appearances means that Villa have remarkably paid more than £1m per match for the 28-year-old thus far.

Sanson earns £48,077-per-week at Aston Villa and has been with the club for 85 weeks now, resulting in a total of £4,086,545.

When you combine that with the £16m the Villans paid to Marseille, then they have shelled out more than £2om on the midfielder, which looks to have been a huge mistake when you consider his torrid time in England thus far.

Is Sanson Villa's worst ever signing?

Gerrard handed Sanson a rare start against Manchester United last season but a mistake led to the Red Devils scoring and he was replaced not long after, booting a water bottle into the crowd as he came off the pitch.

He has appeared just four times since then, with just one start, so that act of petulance certainly didn’t improve Sanson’s chances of saving his Aston Villa career.

The summer additions of Leander Dendoncker and Boubacar Kamara will only serve to limit Sanson’s game time further and it is difficult to see him featuring any time soon.

Unfortunately for the Villans, with the transfer window now shut, it seems likely that they will be paying Sanson’s wages until January at least, although the club might consider contract termination if no buyer can be found, as his Villa deal is currently set to expire in 2025.

If he cannot be sold before then, Villa would be paying £48,077 for the next 150 weeks, which represents another £7,211,550 – a fee which simply cannot be justified when you consider just how much of a nightmare Sanson’s time in England has been.

Therefore, Gerrard must ensure that he leaves the club as soon as possible, as it seems clear at this point that he will never be a regular at Villa Park.
