Aston Villa must surely regret missing out on Juventus sensation Weston McKennie

If there is one player that Aston Villa must look back on with a sense of regret that they didn’t manage to pull off a deal for, then Weston McKennie is surely right there near the top of the list.

The USA international was touted with a switch to Villa Park in the summer transfer window, with reports claiming that the midfielder had specifically asked about Dean Smith’s side and was hoping for a serious offer from them.

In the end, that didn’t materialise, and McKennie ended up completing a switch to Serie A giants Juventus. And if Villa needed any more proof that they may have missed out on a potentially superstar signing, then they only have to look at his performance against Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Who did Aston Villa sign James Milner from in 2008 for £12m?

In a 3-0 win for the Bianconeri, McKennie was a huge presence in the centre of midfield for Andrea Pirlo’s side, even getting himself on the score-sheet in the 20th minute.

Described as an “outstanding talent” by his former manager at Schalke, David Wagner, the £19.8m-rated workhorse put in an incredible shift in the middle of the park.

As per Sofascore, he completed 100% of his dribbles, boasted an impressive 88% pass accuracy, and lost possession just six times over the course of the 90 minutes – even Cristiano Ronaldo lost the ball more times than he did (8).

The fact the 22-year-old put in such a commanding display on the biggest stage at the Camp Nou made it all the more impressive, and one that would have left Smith ruing missing out on his signature.

Villa fans can only now imagine the kind of formidable partnership he could have formed alongside Douglas Luiz in the engine room.

Meanwhile, Villa must do whatever it takes to keep this “absolute star”; and it’s not Grealish.
