Aston Villa crashed out of the Carabao Cup in the third round as they lost out 4-2 against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Unai Emery's side were unable to repeat their trick from the weekend, which saw them beat the Red Devils 3-1 at Villa Park in the Spaniard's first game in charge of the club.

However, there were signs of promise from the Villans, as they twice took the lead at Old Trafford before a series of defensive mistakes gifted the home side the victory.

Ollie Watkins opened the scoring with a well-taken finish from Jacob Ramsey's pass before United equalised less than a minute later after Bruno Fernandes was found through on goal to square for Anthony Martial.

Diego Dalot's own goal restored Villa's lead but once again defensive frailties came to the fore just moments later, as Tyrone Mings' slip allowed Marcus Rashford to equalise.

With the game on a knife edge, Robin Olsen's shocking pass allowed United to take the lead through Fernandes before Scott McTominay wrapped up the win in added time after a glorious Alejandro Garnacho cross.

While the goalkeeper was at fault for that third goal, it was arguably his Swedish teammate Ludwig Augustinsson who was Emery's true villain at Old Trafford, failing to perform on what was an extremely rare outing for the full-back.

As per SofaScore, the Sevilla loanee would earn a shocking 5.9/10 rating for his display, which was the worst of any outfield player to feature in the game on Thursday evening.

During his time on the pitch, the left-back would fail to complete a single tackle, key pass, cross or long ball, which emphasises how poor he was both from an attacking and a defensive perspective.

Augustinsson would complete just 18 passes and one successful ground duel, whereas United's left-back Tyrell Malacia contributed five tackles, 63 passes and nine successful duels, so he completely outshone the Swede despite being five years younger.

Birmingham Live certainly agreed that the left-back struggled, awarding him a 5/10 rating for his display, with Ashley Preece labelling him "sloppy."

Emery was forced to substitute Augustinsson with ten minutes remaining after a woeful display that included just 36 touches of the ball, and it is difficult to see the loan man starting many other games ahead of Lucas Digne this season.
