While Aston Villa have shown over the years that they are not shy when it comes to spending significant amounts of money on bringing new players to the club, they could well be forced to explore the market once again when the summer transfer window opens.

During the recent January transfer window, it was reported that Spanish club Atletico Madrid were interested in making a move to sign Villa right-back Matty Cash after seeing Kieran Trippier leave for his move to Newcastle United.

Whilst nothing happened with Cash last month, it has since been claimed that Diego Simeone's side could reignite their interest in the full-back this summer and launch a move for the Polish international.

If this move were to happen, this could push Villa into looking for a new right-back to come in to potentially replace Cash.

However, they may already have a suitable replacement for the former Nottingham Forest defender in their ranks that could finally become an important figure for the Villans.

The Midlands club signed right-back Frederic Guilbert back in the 2019 January transfer window from Caen before loaning him straight back to the French club until the end of the 2019/20 season.

With just 32 senior Villa appearances under his belt, the 27-year-old has managed to rack up three goals and provide three assists in the process, which is a good return for a full-back.

Currently on loan with Ligue 1 club Strasbourg, Guilbert has managed to provide three assists in 20 league appearances and earn himself an overall performance rating of 7.13/10 according to WhoScored, making him their second-highest rated player, showing how impressive he has been there.

Moving forward, if Villa do end up selling Cash in the summer, Gerrard has the chance to save the club millions in potential transfer fees by giving the £5.4m-rated Frenchman a chance to finally shine for the Villans rather than look for a replacement elsewhere.

Taking into account how the Villa loanee has managed to rack up more assists than Cash this season as well as a higher number of crosses per game than him, Guilbert could potentially be a more attacking option at right-back under Gerrard if he does get a chance to play for the club next season.
