Aston Villa: Jacob Ramsey ran the show for England U21s vs Germany

Aston Villa saw a number of their first-team stars called up for duty over the international break, with Jan Bednarek in action for Poland, Leander Dendoncker being involved for Belgium, John McGinn called up for Scotland, Robin Olsen linking up with Sweden, Emiliano Martinez being called up for Argentina and Jacob Ramsey featuring for England U21s.

And, despite a number of admirable performances being turned in by Villa players while on duty for their respective international sides, it was perhaps the display of Ramsey in the 3-1 victory over Germany U21s on Tuesday evening that was the most impressive of the two-week break – with the 21-year-old well and truly running the show for Lee Carsley’s side.

Which club did Villa sign Leon Bailey from in the 2021 summer transfer window?

Indeed, over the course of his 70 minutes on the pitch, the £36m-rated starlet bossed the midfield, enjoying 49 touches of the ball, making three key passes, completing two of his three attempted dribbles and winning seven of his nine duels – a success rate of 78% – as well as making two tackles and two interceptions.

The £70k-per-week talent particularly impressed with his surging runs from the heart of midfield, continually breaking the German lines and creating opportunities for the Three Lions – with Aston Villa Statto stating their belief that the youngster’s “driving runs are something to behold.”

This was evident in the buildup to Folarin Balogun’s 41st-minute equaliser, when the player who Tom McGowan dubbed “unreal” picked up possession in his own half and began driving forwards, twice evading pressure from Felix Nmecha, before playing in Antony Gordon, who in turn squared the ball for Balogun to fire home.

Somewhat ironically, this is exactly the sort of midfielder Gareth Southgate’s senior squad could very much do with ahead of the World Cup this winter, with England having lacked creativity and drive from the middle of the pitch over their disastrous Nations League campaign – which ultimately ended in relegation from Group A.

Indeed, should the 21-year-old “starlet” be able to continue this level of form over October and November, the England manager will certainly consider taking Ramsey to Qatar – as the Villa sensation very much looks as if he could be the answer to England’s creative prayers.
