Aston Villa: Steven Gerrard had a shocker on Finn Azaz

Aston Villa have suffered greatly so far this season, in a campaign where it was expected that Steven Gerrard would help them take the next step after last season’s 14th-placed finish.

However, with injuries, poor performances and tactical blunders, his reign came crumbling to an end just last week.

Whilst he will likely be lambasted for the money spent this summer and the lack of cohesivity between attack and defence, one of his more overlooked mistakes was to loan out promising young midfielder Finn Azaz.

His performances already this season at Plymouth Argyle stand as proof as to why he was perhaps ready for the chance to fight for a spot in the first team – especially when John McGinn has been in such poor form.

The Scotsman was dropped by Aaron Danks for their most recent win against Brentford, whilst in his last nine starts, he had not helped his side to a single win.

Meanwhile, the 22-year-old has starred for a Pilgrims side that sits atop of the League One table.

Should Aston Villa have kept Finn Azaz?

His creative exploits have seen him score six and assist three in just 15 appearances, a fine return from central midfield.

For comparison, the Villa captain is yet to score or assist this season despite having earned a reputation for being a slightly more attacking option from the engine room.

This marks Azaz’s second loan spell in as many years, with last season being another fine campaign at Newport County.

Whilst there, he earned huge praise as he cruised to the division’s Young Player of the Season as he scored seven and assisted seven more in League Two.

David Ginola at Aston Villa

First up, who did Aston Villa sign David Ginola from in 2000?

His manager James Rowberry had the following to say on the former West Bromwich Albion man: “Finn has been terrific for us… He could have made today quite easy for himself but he’s a driven individual and I admire that. He’s capable of so much.”

Gerrard had a shocker in his this decision to move Azaz on, even on a temporary basis, as he could’ve utilised him this season to add some freshness and youthful excitement to the midfield.

Although, this loan does mark another season where he continues to prove his ability at the senior level. Surely next season under Unai Emery must spell his true chance to break into the first team.
