Aston Villa’s miserable result last night against Fulham proved to be the final nail in Steven Gerrard’s coffin, as he was swiftly dismissed from his role as manager not long after the full-time whistle.

Whilst this will kick the rumour mill into action regarding who his replacement might be, there is still the small task of dealing with the horrendous display that his side put out at Craven Cottage.

Although many will blame Douglas Luiz for his part in the crushing defeat, his side were already 1-0 down and had offered little threat before his sending-off.

By full-time however, they had been completely outclassed. A 3-0 drubbing was underpinned by the hosts having 60% possession and firing off 18 shots with eight on target.

It once again marked a wasteful performance from their midfield, where Jacob Ramsey managed to play just as poor as the Brazilian.

The English attacking midfielder was dragged off with nine minutes left of the match but in all honesty, there was little point in keeping him on for that long.

He touched the ball just 34 times, yet still managed to lose possession on ten occasions in that space of time. His lack of involvement even saw goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez touch the ball 44 times, far more than the 21-year-old.

As the supposed creative link between the defence and the midfield, he was decidedly toothless in the no.10 role that he has impressed in so often.

He did not manage a single shot all game or give one key pass. He even attempted two crosses, neither of which found its mark.

Had he contributed defensively he might have been excused for simply having a bad day at the office, but the fact that he also lost all five of his duels is indicative of a player just not giving 100%.

Ramsey also did not manage a single tackle, clearance or interception either.

His anonymous display which neutralised attack after attack, along with the rest of the underperforming duds in this squad, have now cost their manager his job.

With some of the names linked with the job, they will certainly have to buck their ideas up to stick around at Villa Park.
