Aston Villa took a major cash injection last summer when they sold Jack Grealish to fellow Premier League club Manchester City for a British record fee of £100m.

While undeniably not having the same sort of magnitude as this recent deal, the midlands club have cashed in on other players in the past such as Christian Benteke, Fabian Delph, Jordan Amavi and Idrissa Gueye among others.

One other player that made a move away from Villa Park in recent years that the club could well be regretting now is midfielder Jordan Veretout.

The Villans signed the Frenchman back in the 2015 summer transfer window from Nantes in a deal worth a reported fee of £8m.

With just 29 appearances under his belt for the club across all competitions, the midfielder ended up joining Italian club Fiorentina in the summer of 2017 for a fee of £6.25m after he spent the previous year on loan with Saint Etienne.

Having made 75 appearances in the space of two years with 15 goals and four assists to his name, he found himself on the move again, staying in Italy with AS Roma, where he currently is.

Since then, the former Villa flop, who is currently picking up a weekly wage of £91k-per-week according to Salary Sport, has racked up 22 goals and 15 assists in 118 appearances across all competitions.

Prior to Roma's Europa Conference game against Vitesse tonight, Veretout has appeared in all but three of Roma's games in all competitions this season, showing how pivotal he is for Jose Mourinho.

According to Transfermarkt, the Frenchman's current market value stands at £19.8m, which is significantly higher than the fee that Villa sold him for.

Described as being a "technically gifted" player and a "machine" on the pitch by Matthieu Pianezze, the former Nantes star seems to have definitely got his career back on track after his unsuccessful spell in England.

Taking all of this into account, it's safe to say that the Villans may have been a bit premature when it came to getting rid of the 29-year-old when they did given how prominent he's been in Italy.

Also, having missed out on the chance to sign Rodrigo Bentancur in the previous January transfer window and having a bid rejected for Yves Bissouma, this suggests that Steven Gerrard could do with having a midfield option such as Veretout in his squad at this moment in time.
